Eight scents, poured by hand in Pantin in a rapeseed and coconut wax with cotton wicks. Every vessel is refillable at either boutique. Nothing is discontinued to make room for a seasonal edition; the collection has changed twice in twenty-eight years.
Wet heather, cut grass, woodsmoke
Built for the week after rain in late August. Heather absolute carries the top, and a small amount of birch tar keeps the smoke in the room rather than in the nose.
Iris, cold ash, dry cedar
Orris butter is expensive and slow, and there is no convincing way around it. Three years of root drying sits behind the powdery centre of this one.
Cypress, black pepper, wet stone
The most linear scent we make. It smells the same in the first hour as in the fiftieth, which is either the point or the problem, depending on who is asked.
Sea salt, bitter almond, linen
Cold and clean rather than fresh. Designed for bathrooms and entrance halls, where a heavier scent turns cloying within a week.
White peach, apple wood, green stem
Fruit without sugar, which takes restraint in the formula and a slightly cooler pour so the top notes survive the cure.
Old paper, beeswax, faint vanilla
The smell of a closed library in winter. Our most divisive candle and, for eleven years now, the one the workshop keeps burning at the bench.
Fig leaf, vetiver, damp moss
Green and shaded rather than green and bright. Vetiver from Haiti, used at a level that would be excessive in a perfume and is about right in wax.
Cut hay, clary sage, tonka
Coumarin does most of the work. Sage keeps it from turning into dessert, and the tonka is there in a quantity we argued about for two months.
